speaker.motion is a mechatronic loudspeaker interface for dynamic manipulation of sound directionality in electroacoustic music. Driven with a stepper motor and servo, speaker.motion offers the user access to both pan and tilt parameters allowing for an extensive range of potential directions. Placing the speaker.motion system in different areas of the a concert hall gives the composer the ability to manipulate the physical acoustics of the space within their composition. Particularly when placed towards the corner of the room the audience will experience a great difference between sounds being aimed directly towards them, or being reflected off the walls. Being able to change the position dynamically allows for spatial improvisation to fully take advantage of the acoustics of any particular performance setting.
